Recommendation for raising a kitten.

1. First day in the house:

The kitten appears in an unfamiliar and unknown habitat. Normal manifestation of his fear can be:

  • To hide as further away as he can (under the sofa, a cupboard, etc.) and to stay there for a long time, until he understands that there is no danger to him.
  • To hiss desperately, “blow himself up”, meow plaintively, seeking his mother for protection.
  • Foul in the nearest corner under the pressure of fear.
  • Deny getting out of your hands to the floor and tremble, squeezing to you with the whole of its body.

Your actions should be:

  • Stroke it kindly and call his name in a kind, soft and calming voice. You can try to play with him with a rustling object or a small ball, making him interested in you and to take his attention off the habitat around him.
  • To put the kitten into a small enclosed or confined place or room (any small room) and leave him there alone in peace for some time to let him get used to his new habitat and to understand that there is no danger to him.
  • To make a place for sleeping for him in that confined space such as a small toy house or a basket, putting nearby the smelling package that was given to you in the nursery.
  • To place some bowls with food and drink nearby and a tray with the filling a little bit aside (it is recommended to put it in a corner).
  • It is better to leave the kitten alone in that place, ignoring his plaintive meowing. If “his screams for help” will be unbearable, you can take him to your bed and calm him down. As a rule, the kitten becomes calm and falls asleep, but, on waking up and not being able to orientate at the new place, he may pee anywhere!
  • Every time, the kitten should be left at his place, letting him out during the day to socialize with the family members.

His fear meowing can last up to three days and then, as a rule, it ends and the kitten gets used to the habitat.

2. Teaching him to go to the toilet.

You should empty the contents of the smelling package from the nursery’s tray into his new tray with the filling (but do not scoop the filling!). During the first week, the tray should stay in the same place, chosen by You, in a confined space for the first 5 to 6 days and it is recommended not to clean it up for the first two or three days.

If the kitten does foul outside his tray, the following action should be taken:

  1. Praise him every time when he is in the tray, scooping about and making himself comfortable in there in order to foul.
  2. To tell him off at the place where he should not have fouled and to take him into the tray with the filling immediately and to praise him in there.
  3. To look after the kitten and to take him into the tray every time you see him meowing with no reason and is looking for a place to foul or is starting to scratch the floor, trying to dig out a hole to foul into.
  4. As soon as you mention that the kitten is fouling only into the tray and nowhere else during two or three days, you can start moving the tray into the place, where he will have his tray with the filling when he reaches adulthood.

3. Claw sharpener.

Buy any claw sharpener in a pet shop and put it near his place in a confined space. You can replace it only after the kitten gets completely used to Your flat and to the place of his habitat.

If the kitten is sharpening his claws in any other place (such as the sofa, arm chairs, the door, etc.), the following action should be taken:

  1. To place the claw sharpener as near as possible to the place that the kitten has chosen to sharpen his claws.
  2. To tell him off every time he sharpens his claws in any prohibited place and to actively praise him if he sharpens his claws on the claw sharpener.
  3. To apply a solution of valerian root to the claw sharpener.
  4. To cut your pets’ claws.

4. Kittens diet.

Kittens in our nursery are being taught to eat both natural and dry food, what is done only for the benefit of the future parents. A kitten that has been taught in this way can be easily transferred from dry to natural food and vice versa.

There are the following recommendations for natural food:

  1. Fresh bird meat, beef, lean pork, lamb meat with no fat, rabbit meat, rabbit meat, entrails such as heart or liver, any boiled fish (you can give it fresh fish, but then its pee will smell a lot worse!). At first, until the kitten reaches three to four months of age, all meat products are to be chopped in small pieces in a blender or a mincing machine with addition of any broth for the dilution of the consistency. In the course of the animal getting older, the pieces of meat should be then chopped in larger sizes (but not more than 1 centimetre in diameter).
  2. Milk, cream of 10% fat, yoghurt (kefir), baked fermented milk (ryazhenka), sour cream of medium fat content, curds, cottage cheese to be mixed with milk or cream until the consistency is diluted. Any cheese to be cut to little pieces or cubes. Any porridge made on milk by the choice of the kitten.
  3. You can also add a fresh egg to the milk or cream, if it does not have diarrhoea.
  4. You should take out the bones from the fish at first and when the kitten grows up you may chop fresh fish in cubes including bones.
  5. Every kitten has got his own individual tastes, so you can add up seeds, pop-corn, nuts, fresh vegetables, etc. to his ration. The main point is that the food must be natural, fat-free and non-fried with no addition of vinegar.
  6. It is necessary to carry out vitamin therapy with natural diet and to thoroughly watch over the kittens’ stool, cancelling out the food that causes diarrhoea

Cats usually eat everything they are given (although they prefer meat products). Try to give them any fresh food and You will understand, what Your kitten likes most of all and what it does not like. He will show it himself! Frequency of food intake depends on the age of the kitten: 2-4 months – 4 times a day; 4-7 months – 3 times a day; and from 8 months – 2 times a day.

The following options are recommended for dry food feeding:

  1. Dry food from NUTRO Choice, HILLS. There should always be dry food in the food bowl in a quantity enough for it to eat, because the cats eat in small portions and quite frequently, they establish by themselves which individual portions to take with time.
  2. Canned food from MAKSS, NUTRO Choice, GOURMET, WISKAS.
  3. There should always be a bowl of water near the dry food bowl!
  4. There is almost no need for vitamin therapy, when feeding Your cat with dry food, because dry food is balanced by additions of vitamins.

5. Vitamin therapy.

The nursery recommends adding up the following vitamins to the food especially if the kitten is getting used to natural food. The list follows:

  1. Vitamins from Kitzim, Sanal, Hearts (Doppel Hearts), “8 in 1” for kittens by the dosage, noted on the package.
  2. For the stimulation of height growth and increasing the proneness to illnesses, the following medicine should be added to the food: food sulphur for animals (on the edge of the knife 2-3 times a day), Vetom-11 (on the edge of the knife 2-3 times a day), Laktobifadolum for cats (on the edge of the knife 2-3 times a day).
  3. Give the cat an opportunity to eat fresh grass (it is sold in pet shops in pots), which is useful for kittens’ stomach. There are a lot of natural easily digested microelements in it, which are necessary for his growth and fur quality.

6. Taking care of the kitten.

The cats are the cleanest of all the animals, which is why the nursery recommends the following:

  1. You should wash the kitten only if it is very dirty!
  2. Prophylactic or preventive wash using a special shampoo or conditioner for fur should not be more than one or two times a year (only when there is a need or one and a half weeks before an exhibition).
  3. Shampoo for cats with short fur for washing to be “Best in Show” (made in Russia) or RING 5 (made in USA).
  4. During the moulting period, the undercoat to be combed periodically (once or twice a week) with small metal comb or brush with medium prong quantity, using vitamin antistatic agent RING 5 when required.
  5. In order to shine the fur frame hair, periodically You can “Stroke the Kitten” with suede clothe or glove.
  6. It is recommended to wipe the eye corners every morning with a cotton wool pad, moisted in clean boiled water in order to get rid of any accumulation of physiological discharges.
  7. Cut its nails if required (usually it should be done once a month), using special claw cutters from Trixi.

7. Prophylactic vaccinations.

Any respectful and caring owner that care about the health of his kitten must vaccinate his pet in time in order to protect it from the most dangerous cat diseases, such as rabies, panleikopenia, rinotraheit, calcivirouse, microsporia and trihofitia.

  1. Degelmintization of the kitten should be carried out before any vaccination. Preferably 7 to 10 days in advance.
  2. Planned degelmintization of the kitten should be carried out once in 2 or 3 months (if it is being fed with raw food or if the kitten goes out on the streets and socializes with other animals). If the kitten is quite domestic, does not go out to the street and is being fed only with dry food, the degelmintization should be carried out 2 times a year in case with other vaccinations.
  3. It is also recommended to carry out an anti flea and anti mite prophylactic during the spring and early autumn times with the aid of special veterinary medicines and preparations. Otherwise, it is recommended to get a special saturated anti flea and anti mite collar (especially if the kitten is being taken to the cottage house (dacha) during the summer, where it may walk in the wild).

8. On sterilization.

The nursery recommends to castrate the kitten when it reaches the age of 6 to 8 months (just right after the appearance of first signs of hunting) if it is not in your plans to use the animal for further breeding purposes.

The cat can be castrated in any age, but it will experience less hormonal and psychological breakdown if it is carried out at the recommended times.

We hope that our recommendation, provided by our nursery, will help You to bring up a charming, mighty, active and cheerful animal from the kitten bought from us, which would become a true representative of the British cats’ breed.
